THE POWER LIST

Image
HASHTAG BHM We all need a bit of positivity now and then to make us feel the world isn't so bad, especially on a Friday afternoon when the week feels like it's never going to end so I found this amazing list championing diversity in the creative industry.  The Dots put together this impressive list for Black History Month and  asked 11 of their creative heroes to each nominate 10 leading black change makers and creators who are shaping the current climate with raw talent, big ideas and crazy hard work. The founder, Pip Jamieson  started The Dots , explaining she fundamentally believes in the power of diversity and how it can inspire the industry to think differently and create magic. The Dots is a professional network for the people and teams that don’t wear suits to work. It's the best place to showcase your  projects , build your personal brand, and collaborate with other  creators . Connect with the  jobs  you actually...

CODE: LIPSTICK

Image
The Lipstick Effect  It's so important to understand what's happening in your environment whether it's socially, politically or economically. It can have a direct effect on your business either for the better or for the worst. Tightening the purse strings means that consumers are less likely to make big purchases like a sofa or a new bed or a new car and perhaps holding out for another year or two till till our wallets ripen up.  Therefore leading the way for smaller luxuries, que; The Lipsitick Effect.  The  lipstick effect  is the theory that when facing an economic crisis consumers will be more willing to buy less costly luxury goods. [ quote ] It's easier to spend £20 on a lipstick or some other beauty item opposed to £200 on a new mattress . We feel less stressed and pressured to not save £200 for a mattress making it far more easier to hand out £20 for a small luxury item. As explained in The Guardian there h...

The B word !

Image
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail -Benjamin Franklin The dreaded B word also known as The Business Plan has created a bit of a debate especially for those who are in the start up stages of their business. Do you need one? Is there a benefit? What to include? How many pages? Who will read it? Can you start a business without one? So many questions but no a straight answer.  So what is a business plan? It's a deep documented summary of what your business is, why you are doing it, how you are going to do it, who are your competitors, who is your target audience, how do you compare, costings, forecasts, suppliers, back up suppliers, another back up supplier, and lots of other tedious information that usually leaves you with "What's the point of all this", "I just want to do my business and all the fun stuff". I was at a business talk last month and someone in the audience asked the panel if a business plan was necessary?  The panel ...

RE-CODING THE PESSIMIST

Image
" Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work "  - Thomas Edison The moment the light bulb goes bang, it's an energy like no other, buzzing at 100 miles per hour, charged and inspired, feeling unstoppable like your new idea will change the world and it probably could if we gave ourselves half the chance. I remember when I came up with the concept of my brand I was so nervous about what other people would think of the idea, worrying if it had the cool factor, worrying about failing, looking stupid and the pressure to exist on social media with 100000000000 followers was too much. Would anyone like me? will anyone follow me? will anyone buy from me? I'm sure we've all been there at some point even if we didn't outwardly make it known. We tend to usually flirt with an idea then run shy mainly down to a few reasons: Fear:  the fear of the Unknown, fear of trying, fear of hard work, the fear of re...

Feel the fear and just do it anyway !

So ! I've been reading this book called Screw Work Break Free  by John Willaims, I discovered it whilst reading a blog post by  Kayla Joleen  on her top business books for start ups.  With my current mind set of literally wanting to "break free" out of my day job and slap bang into my soul mission, I thought; 'THIS book, with THIS title alone, surely must be my saviour? Right? I was barely an inch in and not even the power of excitement could hold me down! I might even go as far as... 'this book has changed my life'? (And at present I haven't even finished it yet) but honestly, it's changed every bit of my thinking and all the crazy inventions I have come up with, I now actually feel that they are all possible. So this is the moment Code Lemon was born. I've be procrastinating over it for a while, thinking about it, talking about it but guess what? Doing nothing about it... till now that is. I already started a small fashion busin...
